About Ansley

Artist Statement

Ansley Pye is a self-taught San Diego-based contemporary artist.

Her work spans watercolor, oil painting, figurative art, and textural abstraction. She began her professional art career in the late 1980s as a watercolorist, originally using art as a tool for healing. Over time, her creative exploration evolved into a distinct visual language that expresses the emotional and physical marks left by life’s events.

Driven by intuition and disciplined experimentation, Ansley honed her skills through immersive workshops with artists like Douglas Walton, and collaborative painting sessions with Carol Light and Sean Sullivan. In the late 1990s, she expanded into oil painting, drawn by the medium’s richness and luminosity. While she still occasionally paints in watercolor, oil has become her medium of choice.

The central theme in Ansley’s work revolves around the arbitrary and often unseen marks that life leaves behind. From her early botanical pieces—leaves and fruit marked with time and imperfection—to later figurative and abstract works, her art consistently explores the relationship between beauty, imperfection, and transformation. Her layered approach incorporates splatters, textured strokes, and organic shapes that echo the natural world and the unseen emotional landscapes we all carry.

Today, Ansley Pye’s work focuses on abstract still life, abstract botanicals, and purely textural abstract compositions. Her paintings are known for their expressive use of color, layered textures, and symbolic depth—offering viewers a space to reflect on their own stories, scars, and resilience.

Her work is part of numerous private and corporate collections and has been featured in solo and group exhibitions across the United States. Ansley is currently represented by several galleries in Southern California and beyond.

Biography

Ansley’s work explores the intersection of personal transformation, texture, & the natural world.

Ansley

A native of San Diego, Ansley spent her early adult years traveling extensively through Europe and the Middle East, an experience that deeply informed her artistic perspective. After attending La Sorbonne in Paris, she returned to Southern California, where her journey as an artist truly began.

At the age of 29, Ansley was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), a life-altering event that sparked a profound creative awakening. Turning to art as a form of healing, she began her professional career as a watercolorist, later transitioning into oil painting. Her early work focused on the organic forms of leaves and fruit—rendered with sensuality and depth, yet always bearing the visible marks of time, decay, and imperfection. These subtle blemishes became symbols of resilience and beauty, reflecting her own lived experience with MS.

As her practice evolved, Ansley incorporated figurative elements and abstract motifs into her work. Using botanical imagery, expressive linework, and textural splatters, she explored the emotional landscapes left behind by life’s challenges. Her mixed-media and abstract botanical paintings are known for their rich layers, symbolic marks, and a deep reverence for the abstract patterns found in nature.

Today, Ansley’s work is rooted in textural abstraction, where the interplay between color, form, and material becomes the subject itself. Her current portfolio includes pure abstract compositions, abstract still life, and abstract botanical art that reflects years of exploration into surface, pigment, and emotional storytelling.

Through all stages of her career, Ansley has found that the act of creating is one of her greatest sources of strength and healing. Her artwork invites viewers to contemplate the beauty found in imperfection and the stories carried by every surface.
